Evolution and the Decline of Ethics & Morality
A good friend of mine once told me, If it doesn't
make sense, you are seeing spiritual warfare. - Vern
Are you wondering what's happening to our world? School
shootings. Every other person seems to be tattooed, pierced or both.
Over 55 million abortions since 1973. The government is becoming
our saviour. Truth has become whatever each individual wants it
to be. And there is a growing feeling of hopelessness and despair.
The behaviours we're seeing and the decisions being
made make no sense. I think my friend is right. We're seeing spiritual
warfare on a major scale and evolution is one of Satan's big
guns.
Frank Zindler, a leading atheist debater, got it
right when he said:
The
most devastating thing, though, that biology did to Christianity
was the discovery of biological evolution. Now that we know that
Adam and Eve never were real people, the central myth of Christianity
is destroyed. If there never was an Adam and Eve, there never was
an original sin. If there never was an original sin, there is no
need of salvation. If there is no need of salvation, there is no
need of a savior. And I submit that puts Jesus, historical or otherwise,
into the ranks of the unemployed. I think that evolution is absolutely
the death knell of Christianity.
Satan's plan has not changed. The promise is you
can be like God. He is using evolution to make it appear he
can deliver on that promise.
The liberal-humane fiction of the equality
of all people was surely one of the most arbitrary, ignorant things
that the human mind has ever devised. - Christian von
Ehrenfels, Founder of Gestalt Psychology
What beliefs and behaviours are encouraged by evolution?
1. Change is for the better
2. Some people are superior
3. Life has no intrinsic value
4. Life has no purpose or reason
If evolutionary change results in people who are superior
to others, doesn't it make sense for them to be in charge? Obviously
the superior people should be making the decisions, because they
make the right decisions. And because they have great compassion,
they will take care of everyone else. What this leads to is bigger
government. A government whose purpose is to take care
of everyone else. A supposed benevolent aristocracy.
Evolutionary
thinking has been happening in government for decades. For example,
the legislative branch is supposed to be where the laws are made.
But, recognizing there are people with superior knowledge the Congress
has given that law making authority to agencies such as OSHA, EPA,
MSHA and others. These agencies write regulations that have the
force of law (legislative). They enforce those regulations and levy
penalties (executive). They adjudicate disputes (judicial). All
three branches of government are rolled into one agency because...
of course, they are the experts.
The result is a separate class of people, the superior,
the experts who make the rules for everyone else, but are not
subject to rules. It should be obvious they are superior and don't
need the guidance of the rules.
Since
change is constantly makes things better, we need to embrace change
and even seek what is new, because it will be better. As a result
some American courts have turned to more advanced Europe
for legal precedence. And we see European countries refusing to
honour extradition treaties because of, for example, the barbaric
treatment of child molesters in America5 (we keep repeat offenders
away from children).
The truth is, evolutionary ethics can be used to
justify whatever you want to do. Richard Weikart wrote about
social Darwinists in the early 20th century, Their proposals
for sexual reform were, in fact, wildly divergent, ranging from
free sex to monogamy (though often with loop-holes) to polygamy.
Some even called on evolutionary ethics to justify homosexuality.
Evolutionary ethics thus seemed to offer proponents just about whatever
sexual morality they preferred.
What happens when life has no intrinsic value?
55 million abortions, mostly just for convenience. In the more
advanced country of the Netherlands 8% of newborn babies are
killed. It doesn't matter, they are just chemicals and random mutations.
The procreation of sick, degenerate children
is the most serious crime that a person could ever commit.
- Gustov von Bunge
If
there is no purpose or reason for life and we are just the result
of random mutations random mistakes what does it matter
what we do? Live for the moment. What happens to future generations
does not matter. Eat, drink and be merry. Hedonism, pleasure and
narcissism are the rule not the exception. Don't worry, there is
no God, or if there is he is an all-forgiving god. Morality is whatever
the majority says it is (until someone with greater power changes
the rules).
In an opinion article for Fox News Dr. Keith Ablow
wrote about a study that has been on-going for 47 years and includes
data from 9 million young adults. The study shows that today's college
students call themselves gifted and driven to succeed, even
though their test scores and time spent studying are decreasing.
In describing a study by psychologist Jean Twenge,
the article reported the tendency toward narcissism in students
is up 30 percent in the last thirty-odd years
Dr. Ablow notes that, False pride
can never be sustained. The bubble of narcissism is always
at risk of bursting. Thats why young people are higher on
drugs than ever, drunker than ever, smoking more, tattooed more,
pierced more and having more and more and more sex, earlier and
earlier and earlier, raising babies before they can do it well,
because it makes them feel special, for a while. Theyre doing
anything to distract themselves from the fact that they feel empty
inside and unworthy.
Dr. Abow concludes that the result we can expect is
an epidemic of depression and suicidality, not to mention
homicidality, as the real self-loathing and hatred of others that
lies beneath all this narcissism rises to the surface.
The study is measuring the result of over 150 years
of evolutionary teaching and thinking. The lessons have been learned
and are now being lived out. We see not just our youth, but a growing
majority living in conformity to the principles of evolution and
social Darwinism.
Are we paying attention to this war? In most cases
the evolution vs. Bible debate is being fought on the fields of
science and intellectual knowledge. And that's needed. But,
we should never forget that this is just one battlefield. We are
in a major spiritual war with only one way of winning... the cross
and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Phil Johnson, the executive director of Grace To You
noted, Evangelicals and fundamentalists were all swept
up in prohibition. They wanted to outlaw liquor and they managed
to do it. They made it illegal. And in the process they totally
lost their focus on the gospel. I don't think either movement, evangelicals
or fundamentalists, ever really recovered their focus, their proper
focus on the gospel.
Without the gospel the battle over Biblical creation
is lost. Without the gospel your neighbors, friends and family are
lost. Without the gospel humanity is lost.
We are in a spiritual war and we cannot leave the
gospel in the pages of the Bible. We need to take it out, put it
on our lips, and speak it to the world. We are told to go and make
disciples. That is a command not a suggestion.
What stops most of us from sharing the gospel? Fear.
How do we overcome that fear?
Many tools available to help overcome fear, break
the ice and start a conversation about the gospel. For example,
Living Waters Publications is a good source for fun gospel tracts.
If you prefer friendship evangelism, don't wait, invite
your friend to your home and watch a video such as MOST
or 180.
These easily lead to a conversation about the gospel. Or use a tool
such as the eCube, which makes telling the
story about Jesus and the gospel easy and interesting.
To learn how to share the gospel read a book such
as Share Jesus Without Fear by Bill Fay or Conquer
Your Fear, Share Your Faith by Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort.
But, no matter what tool or approach you use, the
Biblical gospel must be presented. Remember, people believe they
are the crowning achievement of evolution. Everyone thinks they
are easily good enough to get into heaven, if there is a heaven.
So in today's evolution soaked culture it is important to define
what sin means you've broken God's laws. When you break the
law there is a penalty to be paid. Jesus died to pay the penalty
you've earned for breaking God's laws. He was dead, buried and on
the third day He was raised from the dead, showing us His promises
are true and there is life after death.
Mark Mittelberg, in the book The Unexpected
Adventure describes how to do this:
1. Take a deep breath. Funny thing, but outreach
always goes best when you have plenty of oxygen in your lungs.
2. Say a quick prayer. Ask God to lead and use you,
But it must be quick about the amount of time required to
take the deep breath.
3. Open your mouth. This makes your words much easier
to understand.
4. Let it fly. You've got air in your lungs, God on
your side, and something to say; what more could you possibly ask
for? Speak up and spark some spiritual action. Don't delay. Don't
change the subject, and don't give the devil time to whisper in
your ear that this is not an opportune moment.
